Why Education?

Education is a key pillar for the Engineering Forum because our industry needs engineers. For this reason we take it upon ourselves to encourage people of all ages to think about and follow a career in Engineering.

We work localy to raise the awareness of engineering in the area and promote the various different disciplines within engineering, such as design, manufacturing e.t.c.

We currently run activities focused on working with young people between 10 and 24. We hope these activivties give great insight and opporunities to get students on their way as an engineer.

Schools Engineering Challenge

The schools challenge is a yearly event aimed at year 9 students. The Pupils are split up into teams and given 3 projects to complete over a six month period. This year the projects where to build a remote control car, and design and built an aluminium bridge and a wind turbine.

This allowed the students to experiment with machinery they would not usually get to use in school and also give them an insight into what the life of an engineer is like. The project also allows them to get to know there teachers in a more relaxed and less formal environment.

At the end of the six months a finals day is held, this is where all the schools come together to compare projects and battle it out for various prizes.

Primary Structures

Primary structures is one day project designed for primary school students where we instruct the children how to use A4 sheets of paper to build a small bridge.

The classes are split into groups of 4 or 5 children and then the bridges are tested with weight to see which groups built the strongest bridge.

Trainee Pool

We are pleased to announce that we have secured funds to run the East Durham Trainee Scheme. This is a great opportunity for young people in the east Durham area interested in manufacturing to get involved with the industry in a difficult time for employment.

The Trainees will recieve world class training from six member companies of the East Durham Engineering Forum, compliment by NVQ level courses run by the training providers.

The selection process begins at the learning centre of light on Wednesday the 14th of April.
